Friends of Scouting —
Unit Giving

More young people and families than ever before are taking advantage of Scouting's time-tested, values-driven program!

The 2004 Friends of Scouting Campaign is underway. FOS is our annual effort to raise funds to cover the costs of providing Scouting programs to nearly 10,000 youth in Mt Baker Council.

This effort is necessary to raise the additional funds above and beyond what the United Way and other income sources provide, making up the council's largest single source of income.

Who Pays for Scouting?

Assisted by their parents or guardians, boys in Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting, and Varsity Scouting and young men and women in Venturing pay their share from personal savings and participation in money-earning projects.

Members buy their own uniforms, handbooks, and personal equipment and pay their own camp fees. These costs only provide a small part of what it takes to support the programs in Scouting.

Who Pays for the Rest?

It costs about $100 per registered youth to provide the council and district program for Scouting. If each family were to provide what they can in tax-deductible support, the program we provide would be greatly enhanced.

The money raised from the annual FOS campaign stays within our district and council. Island District has made a commitment to raise half of its FOS from within its own member families. The other half we are hoping to raise from the community we serve.
